LAHORE: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday inaugurated the newly renovated Gaddafi Stadium, marking a significant milestone in the 65-year history of the iconic cricket venue just days before the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025.
Earlier, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi visited the stadium to inspect arrangements for the grand opening ceremony. Commending the team’s efforts, he acknowledged their dedication in completing the renovation in record time.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, PM Shehbaz said that it was a happy day for everyone that the stadium’s reconstruction was completed in “such grand fashion”.
The opening ceremony featured an exciting lineup of music, dance, and fireworks, offering fans a vibrant experience with free entry. The stadium gates, except for the Imran Khan enclosure reserved for special guests, opened to the public at 5:30 pm.
Renowned singers Ali Zafar, Arif Lohar, and Aima Baig performed, adding to the spectacle, followed by a stunning drum and fireworks display. A unique light show further amplified the evening’s grandeur.
The Gaddafi Stadium now boasts modern facilities, including brighter LED floodlights, two large score screens, and newly imported seating across all enclosures, ensuring an enhanced viewing experience. Additionally, 10,000 new seats have been installed, increasing the venue’s capacity.
The stadium also features upgraded hospitality boxes and improved amenities for both players and spectators. These enhancements promise a world-class cricketing atmosphere with better seating arrangements and superior viewing angles.
Completing the stadium’s transformation in time for the Champions Trophy was a daunting task, but under Chairman Naqvi’s leadership, the PCB successfully revamped the venue within just 117 days.
“Our venues now meet international standards, and we take pride in offering cricket fans the best experience possible. The stadium’s rapid transformation is a testament to our team’s hard work and dedication,” stated Naqvi.
Acknowledging the workforce’s efforts in making the upgrade a reality, Naqvi added, “I extend my gratitude to the workers who turned this impossible task into a success.”
He also extended gratitude to the workers, the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), NESPAK, contractors, and relevant authorities for turning the vision into reality.
Gaddafi Stadium is set to host New Zealand in the opening match of the tri-nation ODI series on February 8 (Saturday) and will serve as the venue for four Champions Trophy matches, including the second semi-final.
