Pakistan is preparing to host the ICC Champions Trophy in early 2025, marking its first ICC event in decades. However, the tournament's schedule remains uncertain due to India’s refusal to send its team to Pakistan, citing governmental restrictions.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has proposed a hybrid model, where Indian matches would be held in the UAE. This suggestion has been strongly opposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), leading to a deadlock.
Key Proposals for the ICC Meeting
The ICC will discuss three options at its upcoming board meeting:- Hybrid Model: Most matches in Pakistan, with India’s games in the UAE. Semifinals and final involving India would also shift to the UAE.
- Full Relocation: The entire event is moved out of Pakistan, but PCB retains hosting rights.
- Without India: The tournament takes place in Pakistan without Indian participation.
The PCB has rejected the hybrid model, emphasizing that it will not share hosting rights. It has suggested that Pakistan’s matches also move to a neutral venue if the hybrid model is approved for India. PCB officials have asked the ICC to find a fair solution before Friday’s meeting.
Pakistan’s government may deny its team permission to travel to India under the current circumstances. The BCCI’s influence in the ICC, due to its financial contributions, could sway the decision. Starting next month, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah will lead the ICC, further strengthening India’s position.
The PCB has invested PKR 13 billion in upgrading stadiums for the Champions Trophy. Despite the ICC’s offer of financial compensation for losses, the PCB remains firm in its stance. If no resolution is found, Pakistan is prepared to take legal action to protect its hosting rights.
The ICC’s final decision will significantly impact the future of the Champions Trophy and cricket relations between the two nations.
