The Supreme Court of Pakistan has managed to lower its backlog of pending cases to 58,487.
Previously, the number of pending cases had exceeded 60,000 during the tenure of former Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa. From November 16 to 30, the court disposed of 674 additional cases, contributing to the reduction.
The report reveals that the court is currently dealing with 31,458 civil appeals, 10,208 criminal appeals, 18 suo motu cases, 2,209 civil review petitions, 136 human rights cases, and 3,251 jail petitions.
On September 4, it was reported that over 60,000 cases were pending when Justice Faez Isa served as Chief Justice. Between August 16 and 31, 861 new cases were filed, and by August 31, 2024, the backlog stood at 60,508.
The Supreme Court’s full court had earlier pledged to address the backlog of nearly 60,000 cases as quickly as possible.
A meeting was held to evaluate the court's performance in handling and resolving cases. The Registrar provided an update on the caseload and outlined measures to improve judicial efficiency and ensure timely decisions.
