Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has reaffirmed his stance on protecting Sindh’s water rights, emphasizing that there will be "no compromise" on the issue in his message on International Water Day.
“We are the guardians of the Indus River. How can new canals be constructed when Sindh’s fertile lands are already deprived of sufficient water?” he questioned.
Highlighting the Pakistan People's Party’s (PPP) proactive role in water-related matters, the chief minister expressed strong reservations about new canal projects from the Indus River, warning that they pose a severe threat to the province’s agriculture and economy.
He assured that the Sindh government has formulated an effective strategy to address the ongoing water crisis. However, he cautioned that the construction of additional canals would only worsen the situation.
“Hundreds of thousands of livelihoods are at risk due to the decreasing water flow in the Indus River,” he warned, adding that the river’s dry bed signals a serious crisis for both agriculture and life in the region.
Murad Ali Shah further stressed that climate change and the inequitable distribution of river water have intensified the challenges facing the Indus River, making it imperative to take urgent action.
