ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has dismissed the apology offered by Mustafa Kamal, the Deputy Convener of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), in a contempt case related to his recent comments against the judiciary.
In a session presided over by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa along with Justices Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Irfan Saadat Khan, the court declined Kamal's plea for an immediate acceptance of his apology.
Chief Justice Isa questioned Kamal on why he made such statements against the judiciary if he didn't intend to undermine its authority.
The court also inquired about Kamal's decision to hold a press conference and make remarks about the judiciary.
Notices were issued to TV channels for airing these controversial press conferences by Kamal and Faisal Vawda, and the court sought a response from PEMRA on this matter.
The Attorney General emphasized the court's zero-tolerance policy towards disrespecting the judiciary and urged TV channels not to allow their platforms to be used for contemptuous statements.
The hearing was adjourned until June 28, with parties instructed to submit their responses.
Kamal later submitted an affidavit at the Supreme Court Karachi Registry expressing utmost respect for the court and apologizing unconditionally for his previous statements regarding the judiciary.
The Supreme Court had initiated contempt of court proceedings against Senator Faisal Vawda and MNA Mustafa Kamal due to their criticism of the judiciary.
This action was taken after both leaders held press conferences demanding evidence of interference in judicial matters.
Vawda specifically criticized the judges of the Islamabad High Court and called for evidence to be presented. Kamal, in a subsequent press conference, advocated for the implementation of dual citizenship laws across all institutions of the country.
