The Punjab government has introduced a new tax on online payments of traffic challans across Lahore and other cities in the province. Effective immediately, an additional Rs15 will be levied as tax on fines paid through online platforms, according to reports from local Lahore news sources.
For instance, if a traffic violation results in a fine of Rs500, the total amount payable via the online app will now be Rs515 due to this newly imposed tax.
While the measure aims to streamline payment processes, the traffic department has yet to issue an official statement regarding this tax.
Traffic challans are penalties issued by traffic police for various violations, including not wearing a helmet on motorcycles (with a fine of Rs2,000) or driving against traffic flow (also fined at Rs2,000). Upon receiving a ticket, prompt payment typically avoids escalated penalties.
The government's initiative intends to enhance compliance and facilitate digital payments. However, the imposition of this new tax has sparked public discourse about its impact on citizens already burdened with fines.
Discussions are ongoing as to whether this tax will achieve its intended goals of improving payment efficiency and encouraging adherence to traffic laws through digital channels.
