ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast heatwave conditions across the country starting April 13, as a high-pressure system develops in the upper atmosphere.
The Met Office has predicted that temperatures will rise across most parts of the country, with severe heatwave conditions likely to grip southern regions— including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan—starting April 14.
Daytime temperatures in these regions may rise 6-8°C above normal from April 13 to 18.
Temperatures in the northern and central parts — including upper and central Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir — will rise 4-6°C above normal from April 14 to 18.
Night-time temperatures will also stay higher than usual throughout the forecast period. Excessive heat may trigger dust storms and windstorms, which could damage vulnerable infrastructure such as electric poles, trees, vehicles, and solar panels.
Authorities have advised the general public, especially children, women, and senior citizens, to avoid direct sun exposure and stay well-hydrated.
They have also urged farmers to plan their crop activities, particularly wheat harvesting, in line with the forecast and to take necessary steps to protect their livestock.
Rising temperatures in northern areas may accelerate snowmelt between April 14 and 18, increasing the risk of flooding.
Authorities have issued instructions to all relevant departments to remain alert and implement precautionary measures to reduce potential risks.
