At the UN Security Council, Pakistan denounced Israel’s ‘unilateral and unlawful’ recognition of the Somaliland region of Somalia, a move that has also been widely condemned by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and several other countries.
Addressing a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Deputy Representative to the UN, Ambassador Muhammad Usman Iqbal Jadoon, said Israel’s decision was “deeply troubling” and unlawful.
He stressed that Pakistan “fully supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia” and opposes any unilateral actions that undermine internationally recognized borders.
The Pakistani envoy linked Israel’s announcement to earlier statements referring to Somaliland as a possible destination for the deportation of Palestinian people, particularly from Gaza. “This action is a clear violation of international law,” Jadoon said, adding that Pakistan “rejects any attempt to displace the Palestinian people.”
Pakistan urged the international community to uphold international law and relevant UN resolutions, warning that recognition of Somaliland would set a dangerous precedent and further destabilize the region.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not been recognized as a sovereign state by the United Nations.
