The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a reduction in electricity prices under the monthly Fuel Price Adjustment (FCA), making power more affordable for consumers.
A decrease of 75 paisas per unit has been implemented for consumers of government-owned DISCOs under the November FCA. Furthermore, K-Electric consumers will benefit from a 49 paisa per unit reduction under the October FCA.
In December 2024, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed a reduction in electricity tariffs for consumers and the closure of outdated, inefficient power plants.
During a review meeting on upcoming electricity generation projects and the transmission network, the Prime Minister emphasized the need to prioritize low-cost energy initiatives using local resources in Pakistan.
The Prime Minister was briefed on the progress of ongoing hydropower projects in Pakistan, highlighting that hydropower offers low-cost, environmentally friendly energy. He also emphasized the importance of transitioning the current energy infrastructure to solar power, tapping into Pakistan's vast solar energy potential.
PM Shehbaz ordered the immediate closure of power plants that use excessive fuel but produce minimal electricity, stressing that this move would save foreign exchange and lower costs for Pakistani consumers.
He directed officials to accelerate reforms in the electricity transmission system, ensuring adherence to international standards through the use of modern technology. The Prime Minister also called for strict action against officers obstructing these reforms.
Furthermore, Shehbaz Sharif instructed that all power sector reform initiatives be completed within the designated timeframe.
