Askole, the last village in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, experienced heavy snowfall on Sunday, bringing an end to a long dry spell that threatened to exacerbate the country's approaching water problem.
Glaciers in the mountainous region's last village, Askole Pakitan, supply much of Pakistan's water. The Biafo, Baltoro, and Batura glaciers, three of the world's longest glaciers outside the polar regions, are located here.
According to the meteorological authority, the sky will remain gloomy for the next few days, leading the temperature to drop even further. "The dry weather had caused various diseases besides other complications to health," he added, adding that youngsters across the country, especially GB, were the most afflicted. According to specialists, if the northern portions of the country receive less snow and rain in the winter, the country may experience water shortages in the summer, affecting crop output downstream.
Aside from glaciers, G-B is home to more than 20 summits above 20,000 feet (6,100 m), including K-2, the world's second highest peak, which also turns white during the winter.
