A young motorcyclist lost his life in another traffic accident in Karachi, raising the city’s death toll to 107 for the year.
The latest incident involved a 45-year-old man named Saifullah, who was run over by a dumper in Memon Goth.
Karachi has experienced a concerning rise in traffic accidents, with 107 deaths reported in just the first 45 days of 2025. The victims include 78 men, 14 women, 11 children, and 4 girls, according to rescue services.
The Chhipa Welfare Association reported that 1,493 people were injured in these accidents, including 1,290 men, 193 women, 42 children, and 18 girls.
Traffic police stated that many of these accidents involved heavy vehicles such as dumpers, trailers, and oil tankers. In January and early February 2025, there were 32 such accidents.
In response, traffic authorities issued 34,655 challans, arrested 490 drivers, and cancelled 532 vehicle fitness certificates.
A four-member committee has been formed to investigate the causes of these accidents and recommend ways to improve road safety. The committee will also review the fitness certificates of heavy vehicles and driver licenses.
In recent days, unidentified individuals set fire to several cargo vehicles and water tankers in Karachi’s Landhi, Korangi, Al-Karam, and Surjani Town areas.
Police have detained 10 people in connection with the incidents. Meanwhile, the Dumper and Oil Tankers Association staged a protest on the National Highway over the vehicle burnings.
