Karachi’s electricity consumers may soon get relief as K-Electric (KE) has submitted a petition to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking a Rs4.84 per unit reduction in power tariffs.
The proposed refund comes after KE charged higher per-unit electricity rates in January 2025. Under the monthly fuel charges adjustment (FCA) for January, the company aims to return approximately Rs4.84 billion to its consumers.
NEPRA has scheduled a public hearing on March 20 to review KE’s request for a provisional negative FCA.
This follows KE’s earlier petition for a Rs4.94 per unit tariff reduction for December 2024.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing electricity tariffs for domestic consumers and industries through sector-wide reforms.
During a review meeting in Islamabad, he expressed satisfaction with the ongoing changes in the power sector, emphasizing that renegotiating agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) is helping cut electricity costs and saving the national treasury.
Additionally, PM Shehbaz reiterated his government’s crackdown on power theft, pledging to intensify efforts to eliminate losses across distribution companies.
