ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has finalised arrangements for the local government (LG) by-elections in Sindh, set for November 14, with robust security measures in place.
Reports reveal that 213 polling stations across the province have been classified as highly sensitive. In Karachi, a detailed security assessment identified 136 polling stations as highly sensitive, 26 as sensitive, and only 5 as normal.
In specific areas of Karachi, such as UC 9 TMC Malir, all polling stations for the Chairman’s election have been deemed highly sensitive. Similarly, in UC 7 TMC Model Colony, all 21 polling stations for the Chairman’s election are labeled sensitive. In UC 13 TMC Saddar, 7 out of 17 polling stations are highly sensitive, 5 are sensitive, and 5 are normal. Meanwhile, all 31 polling stations in UC 7 TMC Liaquatabad are marked as highly sensitive.
The ECP stated that no district returning officers have requested the deployment of Rangers for these elections. However, stringent security measures have been implemented. Highly sensitive polling stations will be equipped with CCTV cameras, and 16 to 18 police officers will be deployed at each location, while sensitive stations will have 8 to 12 officers.
Out of 77 vacant local seats in Sindh, 40 were filled unopposed. The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) secured 38 of these seats, with the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) and an independent candidate each winning one. For the remaining 33 seats, 175 candidates are contesting across various categories. Notably, four seats remain uncontested due to a lack of candidates submitting nomination papers.
In Karachi, the by-elections will cover 10 seats, with thorough preparations and security arrangements aimed at ensuring a smooth and transparent electoral process. Earlier in September, the ECP Sindh had finalized its plans for by-elections on 77 municipal seats throughout the province.
