New York: The spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General has announced an initial emergency relief of $600,000 from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to support victims of the recent floods and heavy monsoon rains in Pakistan.
Speaking to the media in New York, the spokesperson highlighted the severe humanitarian crisis unfolding in Pakistan over the past 10 days, during which at least 400 people have lost their lives and more than 190 have been injured due to relentless rains and flooding. Over 20,000 people have been displaced from their homes.
The spokesperson emphasized the urgent need for shelter, medical aid, and cash assistance for those affected. He further stressed the importance of providing clean drinking water, hygiene supplies, and ensuring the safety and protection of women and girls.
According to the UN, the monsoon rains that began on June 26 have caused widespread devastation across the country. Local authorities report that so far, 798 people have died and more than a thousand have been injured.
The UN also called on the international community to step forward and provide humanitarian support to assist Pakistan during this crisis.
