CHINA: It is often assumed that individuals with a PhD would prefer prestigious jobs in academia or research.
However, a 37-year-old Chinese national has defied expectations by earning millions through his noodle business.
Ding, a resident of Jiangsu province, pursued his PhD in China before moving to Belgium with his wife to continue research. Over the years, he has published around 30 academic papers.
He met his wife, Wang, during university, and the couple married in 2015 before settling in Beijing, where their first child was born.
Despite his strong academic background, Ding was unable to secure a stable job in Belgium outside of research. This led him and his wife to launch their own venture.
In May 2025, the couple began selling spicy noodles in Belgian markets. Their recipe includes noodles mixed with tender peas and other ingredients, quickly becoming popular among locals.
Wang revealed that the spicy noodle dish is a specialty from her hometown and something she has enjoyed since childhood.
Ding shared that the couple operates their stall only twice a week, yet they earn over €1,000 (equivalent to more than PKR 335,000) in a single day. When not assisting his wife at the stall, Ding continues searching for employment opportunities.
According to Wang, running the noodle business is not much different from conducting research, as it requires precision, consistency, and problem-solving — while also providing financial support for their family.
