Chicago: More than twenty Pakistani runners are set to participate in the Chicago Marathon this Sunday, joining a global field of 53,000 athletes. The contingent comprises both native Pakistani athletes and expatriates from the US, UK, and UAE, underscoring Pakistan’s increasing prominence on the international running stage.
Since its inception in 1977, the Chicago Marathon has become one of the world’s most popular and prestigious races. The course begins and ends at Grant Park, winding through 29 city neighborhoods, including Lincoln Park, Chinatown, Wrigleyville, and The Loop.Leading the Pakistani contingent is Faisal Shafi, a veteran marathoner and Guinness World Record holder, who is running to raise Rs 5 million (approximately $18,000) for flood victims in Pakistan. Shafi stresses that this marathon is not just a personal milestone but an opportunity to raise crucial awareness and support for those affected by the floods.
Several Pakistani runners are aiming to beat their personal bests on the marathon’s fast and flat course. Sana Malik hopes to improve on her previous time of 4:04, while Dania Ali prepares for her first-ever World Marathon Major race. Yasir Memon dedicates his run to the spirit and resilience of the Pakistani people facing daily hardships.
