Minister Khan emphasized that promoting M-Tag usage is a priority, even though 42 percent of Pakistan’s road network is located in Balochistan, where there are currently no toll plazas. This absence poses significant challenges for road maintenance and development in the province. Similarly, Gilgit-Baltistan, with its 900 kilometers of roads, has only one toll plaza, further highlighting the need for improved toll collection systems.
The minister also reported that toll tax collections from highways and motorways amounted to Rs. 60 billion last year, with projections exceeding Rs. 100 billion for the current year. This significant increase underscores the importance of efficient toll collection and management.
Providing further context, Minister Khan shared that Pakistan has a total of 38 million vehicles, with motorcycles comprising 70 percent of this number. Of the 2.7 million larger vehicles, 70 percent are old, indicating a need for modernization within the country's vehicle fleet.
In response to a calling attention notice, Abdul Aleem Khan mentioned that the National Highway Authority (NHA) plans to deploy 2,500 motorway police officers across various highways in Balochistan. This deployment aims to oversee speed control and ensure commuter safety, addressing critical concerns for road users in the province.
