New Delhi: The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has responded strongly to the United States' decision to impose additional tariffs on Indian goods, calling the move "unfortunate."
In an official statement, the ministry said, "The U.S. actions are unfair, unjustified, and unnecessary." It emphasized that India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests.
The ministry also suggested that the U.S. decision appears to target India's oil imports from Russia. "We have already clarified our position regarding oil imports from Russia," the statement added.
India reiterated that it will continue to make decisions in line with its energy security and economic priorities.
The Congress party has also reacted strongly to the recent decision by the United States to impose a 50% tariff on Indian products, stating that it will lead to further price hikes for Indian consumers.
"Modi’s friend Trump has slapped a 50% tariff on India," said the Congress party, criticizing the Indian Prime Minister's silence on the issue.
The party alleged that "Trump is consistently taking actions against India," yet "Narendra Modi doesn’t even dare to mention Trump's name."
"Narendra Modi should gather the courage to respond to Trump," the Congress party urged.
Labeling Prime Minister Modi as a "weak leader," the Congress said, "A weak Prime Minister is dangerous for the country."
The Congress further claimed that "Modi’s hands are tied because of his close ties with Adani," adding that "investigations are underway against Adani in the United States."
"Adani is the weakness of a weak Prime Minister," the Congress concluded.
