ICC brings innovation to the field with AI pitch analysis

In a groundbreaking move blending sports and technology, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced AI-driven pitch analysis during the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup. The innovation was showcased ahead of the tournament's tenth match in Visakhapatnam, where former Indian captain Mithali Raj used Google's Gemini tool to deliver the pitch report.

The demonstration marked a historic first in international cricket, highlighting how digital tools are transforming live sports coverage. With the help of the Gemini Live feature on her smartphone, Mithali Raj captured the pitch visuals and sought real-time analysis an interaction that signaled a new era in match presentation.

“We are here for an ODI match at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam. The weather is hot and humid. What do you think about this pitch?” Mithali asked the technology during the live segment.

The tool responded swiftly, noting: “The pitch appears flat with minimal grass cover, favoring batters. Given the hot and humid conditions, swing is likely to be limited. A high-scoring game is expected.”

Mithali Raj echoed the analysis, saying, “It’s definitely a good batting pitch. I expect fans will enjoy a game full of runs today.”

This innovative step by the ICC aims to enhance viewer engagement by offering deeper insights and real-time analysis during match coverage. The use of AI tools in live sports broadcasting is rapidly gaining traction, with cricket now joining other global sports in adopting modern technology for a more interactive fan experience.

The match in Visakhapatnam not only offered a thrilling contest on the field but also signaled how cricket is evolving with time making the game not just more exciting, but also smarter.
