PARIS: A French parliamentary commission has proposed a complete ban on social media use for children under the age of 15, foreign media reported.
According to details, the commission released its findings after a six-month review of the psychological impact of platforms like TikTok and others on children and teenagers.
The report recommends not only a full ban for children under 15 but also the introduction of a “digital curfew” for teenagers aged 15 to 18, restricting their access to social media from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
The report further said that a public awareness campaign should be launched on social media risks, a crime of digital negligence and the creation of social media accounts must be made mandatory.
A parliamentary commission was set up in France after seven families filed a lawsuit against the social media site Tick Talk in 2024.
During the hearings, parents argued that their children were exposed to harmful online content that drove them to commit suicide.
Responding to the concerns, TikTok informed the committee that it had used artificial intelligence (AI) to detect and remove 98% of content violating its service terms in France last year.
