SRINAGAR: Violent protests erupted in India-held Ladakh, leaving at least five people dead and several injured as demonstrators clashed with police while demanding autonomy and job reservations for local residents, according to official sources.
The unrest follows the region’s loss of autonomy in 2019 when the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, revoked Article 370 and placed Ladakh under direct rule from New Delhi. The majority-Buddhist region has since been pushing for constitutional safeguards to preserve its unique identity and tribal rights.
The latest protests were organized by local activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been leading a movement calling for Ladakh to be granted special status under India’s constitution. The protesters are demanding the formation of local bodies to manage tribal affairs and development.
"During this violence, 2-3 of our youth have died for our cause," said Wangchuk, who vowed to continue the struggle. "We want to reassure the people of Ladakh that we will not let the sacrifices go to waste."
Thupstan Chhewang, chairman of the Apex Body of Leh, echoed the sentiment, urging the government to address their demands.
Footage aired on Indian news channels showed a tense atmosphere with police vehicles set ablaze and tear gas being used to disperse protesters.
Police sources reported that more than 50 people were injured. "It was the frustration of the youth that brought them to the streets," said Wangchuk, who also ended his hunger strike following the violence. "This is not just Ladakh’s problem — if our youth are dying while we’re on a hunger strike, we cannot continue it any longer."
