Cement is now priced at Rs 1700 per sack, concrete at Rs 270 per kg, bricks at Rs 17000 per thousand, gravel at Rs 130 per foot, and a trolley of sand has soared to Rs 25000.
These inflated prices have left many labourers jobless and struggling to make ends meet.
Additionally, labour costs have risen, with workers demanding higher daily wages to cope with the increased cost of living.
The government, too, is criticized for asking for exorbitant wages amidst this crisis.
Sources reveal that local building material dealers have profited immensely from black marketing cement, selling old stock at inflated prices, and exploiting the situation for financial gain.
In response to these issues, the All Pakistan Cement Distributors Association has announced a continued strike.
They argue that continuing operations is unfeasible after cement manufacturers refused to bear the 236H withholding tax on distributors, dealers, and retailers.
A recent meeting of cement manufacturers confirmed their stance, leading to a deadlock and further exacerbating the crisis.
The strike has severely impacted the construction season, causing delays and further price increases in cement.
The ongoing conflict between manufacturers and distributors leaves the construction industry in turmoil, with the working class bearing the brunt of the economic hardship.
As the situation persists, the government must intervene and establish effective regulatory measures to control prices and curb black marketing.
Without such actions, the dream of owning a home will remain out of reach for many, and the construction sector will continue to suffer from instability and unemployment.
