OpenAI is reportedly developing a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) tool called “Operator,” capable of taking control of a user’s PC to perform tasks autonomously.
First reported by Bloomberg, the existence of this AI-driven agent has been further corroborated by Tibor Blaho, a reliable AI industry leaker and software engineer.
Blaho revealed that OpenAI’s macOS ChatGPT client contains hidden options for “Toggle Operator” and “Force Quit Operator,” indicating the tool’s ongoing development. References to Operator have also been discovered on OpenAI’s website.
Operator is designed to handle complex tasks like writing code and booking travel. However, leaked benchmarks show mixed results, with Operator scoring 38.1% on OSWorld—ahead of Anthropic’s computer-controlling model but lagging behind the 72.4% human benchmark.
While OpenAI has not officially announced a release date, reports suggest January as the target month for Operator’s debut. If true, this launch would position OpenAI as a serious contender in the AI agent market, competing with companies like Anthropic and Google.
The AI agent market is projected to grow substantially, with analytics firm Markets and Markets estimating its value to reach $47.1 billion by 2030. OpenAI’s entry with Operator could significantly influence this expanding industry.
