Instagram, owned by Meta, has launched a new feature called “Teen Accounts” to enhance the safety of young users online.
This feature is designed for users aged 13 to 16, limiting their exposure to certain content and interactions to ensure a safer environment.
For new users aged 13 to 15, Teen Accounts will be automatically activated, while existing users in this age group will be switched over within two months in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
These accounts are set to private by default, meaning only approved followers can view content, and messaging is limited to people the teens already follow or have connected with.
The feature also includes restrictions on exposure to potentially harmful content, such as violence or ads promoting cosmetic procedures. Parents can monitor their child's activities, including direct messages and content consumption.
Teen users can still engage with positive topics like sports, music, and art. To promote healthier habits, Instagram will send reminders to take breaks after 60 minutes of use, and notifications will be automatically muted from 10 PM to 7 AM. Advanced technology will be used to ensure that underage users are transitioned to Teen Accounts for better protection.
