LAHORE: Governor of Punjab, Sardar Salim Haider Khan stated that the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leadership unilaterally decided to ban Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) without consulting the Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP).
In a media briefing, Sardar Salim mentioned that the PPP would discuss this issue in its party meeting and Central Executive Committee (CEC).
He further expressed that PTI should be viewed in two segments: those involved in the May 9 incidents should face punishment, but taking action against the patriotic members of the party is inappropriate.
It is notable that federal information minister Ata Tarar announced the government's decision to ban PTI.
In a press conference, Ata Tarar explained that Article 17 of the constitution allows the federal government to ban a political party.
He presented evidence justifying the ban, including the party’s involvement in foreign funding, the May 9 incident, the resettlement of terrorists in Pakistan, the cipher episode, and a resolution passed in the United States.
Ata Tarar also mentioned that a reference would be filed against former President Arif Alvi, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, and former Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri for violating the Constitution when the assemblies were dissolved following the no-confidence motion against the PTI government.
This reference will be sent to the Supreme Court after receiving approval from the federal cabinet.
The minister also highlighted that certain foreign lobbies promote anti-Pakistan agendas, support separatist movements, and conspire against the country’s security and institutions.
He noted that the government plans to take strict legal action against these groups, which may include blocking their passports and identity cards.
