The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has suggested implementing fixed charges on residential electricity bills beginning July 1, 2024.
This proposal, pending government approval, aims to implement a tiered structure based on monthly electricity consumption.
The proposed charges are as follows:

| 601-700 units/month | Rs. 800/month |

This hike aims to generate Rs3.8 trillion for ten power distribution companies (discos) during the fiscal year 2024–25.
The increased charges and tariffs come amidst Pakistan's negotiations with the International Monetary Fund for a new bailout program.
These measures are part of NEPRA's efforts to stabilize the power sector's finances. However, the increased costs are expected to add financial pressure on consumers, particularly those with higher electricity usage.
The final decision on the fixed charges now rests with the government, which will consider the proposal's implications before approval.
