Karachi, a vibrant city, can now relax as the city's Chief Meteorologist, Sardar Sarfaraz, has dismissed concerns about an imminent heatwave.
According to Sarfaraz, a heatwave occurs when temperatures rise 4 to 5 degrees above normal, staying at or above 41 degrees Celsius for four or more consecutive days. Current weather conditions in Karachi do not meet these criteria.
Last Saturday saw temperatures reach 40 degrees Celsius, only to drop to 36 degrees the following day. Today's forecast predicts similar temperatures, ranging from 35 to 36 degrees Celsius.
Looking ahead, Sarfaraz expects the weather to remain stable over the next ten days, with temperatures fluctuating between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius, thanks to the cooling sea breeze.
Although temperatures may be high, Sarfaraz assures that this does not indicate a heatwave.
In contrast, the Pakistan Meteorological Department warns of three heatwaves affecting various cities across the country in the next 25 days.
This warning is due to high atmospheric pressure, which will lead to heatwave conditions in many areas, especially Punjab and Sindh, starting from May 21. A severe heatwave is predicted from May 23 to 27.
Daytime temperatures in Sindh and Punjab are expected to be 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal from May 21 to 23, rising to 6 to 8 degrees above normal from May 23 to 27.
