ISLAMABAD: The PPP senior leadership expressed their opposition to the federal government’s decision to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Monday.
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senior leaders are confused over the announcement of the federal government to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI).
The leaders are not able to contact the central leadership and take their guidelines about the present political situation and press conference of the federal information minister Attaullah Tarar in Islamabad today, who said that the government has decided to move the Supreme Court of Pakistan to ban Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
However the party senior leaders, who are baffled over the government's announcement, contacted one another to discuss the current scenario.
They said that they had not expected from the PML-N that it made such announcement, adding that the PML-N had played wrong political move against the PTI.
They maintained that the PML-N leadership is losing the battle of nerves in difficult political situation, PPP sources quoted the leaders as saying.
The top brass of the party could not have contacted the party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and other central leaders, the sources added. Bilawal Bhutto is currently on a visit to USA these days.
PPP leader Raza Rabbani emphasized that banning a political party contradicts democratic principles and urged the federal government to reconsider.
Rabbani pointed out that the country is already facing severe economic and political instability and warned that banning PTI would exacerbate the political chaos and negatively affect the federal government.
He suggested that the government should focus on addressing the rising trend of terrorism instead.
Senior PPP leader Farhatullah Babar also criticized the idea of banning a political party.
On the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Babar stated that discussing a ban on a political party or prosecuting a political leader for treason is futile, intolerable, and a recipe for political crisis.
He added that Pakistani democracy cannot withstand self-made crises.
Additionally, PPP leader Nasir Shah mentioned that the party chairman opposed the ban, and he personally does not support such measures.
It is important to note that federal information minister Ata Tarar announced the government’s decision to ban PTI.
In a press conference, Ata Tarar said Article 17 of the constitution empowers the federal government to ban a political party.
He stated that there is credible evidence supporting a ban on PTI, citing the party’s involvement in foreign funding, the May 9 incident, its role in the resettlement of terrorists in Pakistan, the cipher episode, and the resolution passed in the United States.
