LAHORE: President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), Tariq Bugti, has said that the federation has formally requested additional time from the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to decide on Pakistan's participation in the upcoming FIH Pro League.
Speaking to the media in Lahore, Bugti stated that discussions with the government are ongoing, and he is hopeful of a positive outcome soon. While the original deadline given by the FIH was August 12, the PHF has requested an extension until August 20.
He emphasized that participating in the Pro League would provide international exposure for players and help improve Pakistan’s global ranking. A budget proposal of Rs. 350 million has also been submitted in support of the team’s participation.
The federation has submitted a budget of Rs. 350 million specifically for the Pro League, with a total annual budget of Rs. 700 million required for all events.
On the matter of the Asia Cup, the PHF President said that the final decision to send the team to India rests with the Pakistani government, and the federation will act in accordance with their directive.
Bugti expressed concerns over the situation, citing a "non-positive attitude" observed in England. He suggested that a PHF delegation should first visit India to assess the situation before a final decision is made. Despite the uncertainty, he confirmed that the players are currently in practice and ready to compete.
