Indore: Reigning champions Australia kicked off their Women's World Cup campaign in style, outclassing New Zealand by 89 runs in a high-scoring clash at Indore. A superb all-round performance highlighted by Ashleigh Gardner's explosive century secured a convincing win and set the tone for Australia's title defence.
Australia, batting first, posted a formidable total of 326 all out, with Gardner producing a breathtaking 115 off 83 balls. Her innings, filled with power and precision, was the foundation of Australia’s dominance. Phoebe Litchfield contributed a handy 45, while Kim Garth added a valuable 38 down the order.
New Zealand’s bowling attack, led by Jess Kerr and Fran Jonas both claiming three wickets managed to slow the scoring late in the innings but couldn't prevent the Aussies from reaching a daunting total.
In reply, New Zealand’s chase faltered despite a valiant effort from Captain Sophie Devine, who struck a resilient 111 to keep her side in contention. Amelia Kerr chipped in with 33, but the rest of the batting unit struggled against Australia's disciplined bowling.
Australia’s bowler’s maintained pressure throughout, with Annabel Sutherland and Sophie Molineux both picking up three wickets each to dismantle the White Ferns' lineup. New Zealand were eventually bowled out for 237 in 43.2 overs, falling well short of the target.
