Over the past decade or so, the introduction of airbags has significantly improved motorcycle safety. Honda is now looking to push this technology even further with a new development. Initially appearing in MotoGP riders' gear sponsored by Alpinestars, airbags have become a vital safety feature for motorcyclists. Brands like Alpinestars and Dainese have made airbag systems available for consumers, fitting into various protective gear.
Honda's latest innovation, as revealed in patents published by Cycle World, involves fitting an airbag to the rear section of a motorcycle's fuel tank, concealed under the bodywork. Unlike car airbags, which protect occupants within the vehicle, motorcycle airbags face the challenge of riders separating from their bikes during crashes.
However, Honda's system is designed to detach post-inflation, utilizing two inflators to maintain pressure and keep the airbag inflated around the rider as they fall. This design aims for reliability after periods of non-use, pressure retention after detachment, and cost-effectiveness.
If this technology advances to production, it could mark a significant advancement in motorcycle safety. Riders would no longer need to compromise on comfort or cost to benefit from airbag protection, especially considering the relatively smaller additional cost when integrated into a motorcycle compared to gear like jackets or suits.
