Robot electrician replaces humans in high-voltage repairs in China

AI takes over high-risk 10 kV electrical work, eliminating human hazards.

As AI and robotics rapidly reshape the global workforce, even electricians are no longer immune. In a groundbreaking demonstration a robot in China successfully performed critical repairs on a 10 kV powerline, taking over one of the most dangerous jobs in the industry.

The achievement highlights the accelerating evolution of technology and its growing role in safeguarding human workers.

Developed jointly by the Hubei Electric Power Research Institute and Wuhan State Grid, the robot uses advanced laser-cutting technology to strip insulation, attach branch wires, and secure connections with exact precision. The automation eliminates human error and significantly reduces the risk of electrocution.

“This robot can navigate even the most complex wiring environments, completely removing the dangers that human electricians face,” said Wu Xin, a technician at Wuhan State Grid.

The operation, carried out in Qingshan County, Hubei, marks a major step forward in workplace safety. Traditionally, electricians working on live 10 kV lines face severe risks, even with specialized protective gear. Robots like this now handle these life-threatening tasks, ensuring both safety and operational efficiency.

Experts note that such innovations do not necessarily replace jobs but rather enhance safety, allowing workers to focus on less hazardous tasks while dramatically reducing fatalities in high-risk professions worldwide.
