Nepal landslide: Rescuers retrieve 11 bodies after two buses swept into River

Officials said Monday that rescuers have recovered a total of 11 bodies from the river after a landslide swept two buses full of people into it. The bodies were found in different locations on the riverbanks as the search continued for the missing buses and the people on board.

Government administrator Khima Nanda Bhusal reported that seven bodies have been identified and relatives have been contacted. Among the deceased, three are Indians, and the remaining four are Nepali nationals.

The buses were on the key highway connecting Nepal’s capital to southern parts of the country when a landslide swept them away on Friday morning near Simaltal, about 120 kilometers west of Katmandu. Rescuers recovered the first body on Sunday, approximately 50 kilometers from where the buses fell.

Improved weather conditions on Saturday allowed search teams to cover more ground in their hunt for the missing buses and passengers. Heavy equipment had cleared much of the landslides from the highway, facilitating easier access to the area as rescuers expanded their scope toward the southern region, where the first body was found, according to Bhusal.

According to the Home Ministry, the government has imposed a ban on passenger buses traveling at night in areas where weather warnings are posted.
