Dubai: Paid parking zones to feature EV charging stations

On Friday, an announcement revealed that the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) will install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at paid parking zones throughout Dubai. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has inked an agreement to broaden the presence of its EV ‘Green Charger’ stations in "prime locations" overseen by Parkin, the largest supplier of paid public parking facilities in the Emirate.

“By the end of April 2024, the number of EVs in Dubai reached over 30,000,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dewa. “This number is expected to increase in the coming years … The number of registered customers in the EV Green Charger initiative has also increased to over 15,000 by the end of March 2024.”

Earlier, Parkin had expressed its exploration of monetization opportunities in the EV sector. The company highlighted the crucial role its parking facilities will play in supporting the transition to EVs, emphasizing that the extensive parking network will facilitate easy access to charging services, thereby incentivizing EV adoption.

“The incorporation of EV charging as part of our facilities is complementary to our growth strategy, representing a significant opportunity to expand the capabilities of our platform.”

Since 2015 until the end of March 2024, the EV Green Charger initiative has enabled electric vehicles to travel a cumulative distance of approximately 130 million kilometers. During this period, the company has operated over 197,000 parking spaces in Dubai.

Once customers register their EVs with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai, Dewa establishes an EV Green Charger account for them, enabling them to charge their EVs within one hour. Additionally, all customers, including unregistered ones, can utilize the guest mode feature to charge their EVs.
