Jay-Z is opening up about one of the most vulnerable chapters of his relationship with Beyoncé, revealing how the superstar helped him overcome his fear of expressing his feelings during the early days of their romance.
The 56-year-old Grammy-winning rapper discussed their relationship during a recent appearance on "JAY-Z on 8", reflecting on the emotions behind his deeply personal song "4:44".
Jay-Z said listening to the song remains difficult because of the painful memories connected to writing and recording it.
“I probably heard that song less than any song I’d ever written,” he said, also mentioning “You Must Love Me.”
The song “4:44” features an emotional apology for his past behavior and explores the feelings he struggled to express during his relationship with Beyoncé.
Jay-Z said he was immature at the time and afraid to make himself emotionally vulnerable. He recalled being unsure how to move their relationship from friendship and phone conversations into a romantic partnership.
Instead of directly asking Beyoncé to become his girlfriend, he said he approached the moment in a way that allowed him to protect himself emotionally.
“I like this woman,” Jay-Z recalled thinking. “How do we take the step from just talking on the phone and being friends to boyfriend and girlfriend?”
He said Beyoncé was more mature than he was at the time, while he struggled to openly communicate his feelings.
The rapper and Beyoncé married in 2008 and have three children together. Over the years, Jay-Z has also spoken publicly about how much his wife has influenced and inspired him.
He praised Beyoncé’s fearless approach to life and described her as a talented producer and writer.
“I’m super inspired by her,” he said. “I think she’s a phenomenal producer and writer.”
