On Monday, the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) announced Pakistan's first "dematerialised digital identity card" during its silver jubilee ceremony. This milestone marks a revolutionary advancement in the national identity system.
During the ceremony, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) unveiled a commemorative coin, Pakistan Post issued a special postage stamp, and Nadra released a book chronicling its 25-year journey.
Nadra held a special event at its headquarters, with its founding chairman, Major General (Retd) Zahid Ehsan, serving as the chief guest.
Nadra Chairman Lieutenant General (Retd) Asif Munir, the special secretary of interior, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) chief statistician, Immigration and Passport's director-general, former chairpersons, board members, and senior officials attended the event.
In his written message, Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control Mohsin Naqvi called the launch of Pakistan's first dematerialized digital identity card a significant step toward digital identity transformation.
He announced that Nadra will integrate this feature into the Pak ID mobile app, allowing citizens to store their identity cards on their smartphones.
Additionally, Nadra will soon introduce a digital verification system to enable secure and instant verification for various services under the World Bank-backed Digital Economy Project. The pilot phase of this initiative will launch on Independence Day 2025.
The minister also emphasized that Nadra provides identity services to remote areas within Pakistan and to Pakistanis living abroad while supporting law enforcement agencies in national security matters.
The event featured a documentary showcasing Nadra’s achievements and the unveiling of a commemorative book, which received great appreciation from the attendees.
Speaking at the event, Ehsan reflected on the organization’s establishment and early journey, stating that Nadra has continuously evolved to transform its vision into reality and steadily achieve new milestones in its development.
