Due to heavy fog in Punjab, multiple sections of the motorway have been closed for traffic. According to sources, Motorway M-2 from Lahore to Kot Momin and Abdul Hakeem Motorway M-3 have been shut down.
Motorway M-4, from Pindi Bhattian to Faisalabad, has also been closed due to the thick fog. Similarly, Sialkot Motorway M-11 has been shut down as well.
In addition to the motorways, heavy fog has also enveloped sections of the National Highway, including Thokar, Pattoki, Okara, and Sahiwal.
The Motorway Police has advised citizens to travel during daylight hours as much as possible, avoid unnecessary travel, and refrain from speeding. Drivers have been urged to exercise caution, use fog lights, maintain safe speeds, and prioritize traveling during the day to avoid risks associated with poor visibility.
It is worth noting that Punjab faces more severe fog issues compared to other provinces, largely due to environmental pollution. In recent months, crop residue burning and industrial emissions have exacerbated the smog and fog conditions, reducing visibility to near zero and leading to an increase in respiratory illnesses.
The Punjab government has launched several initiatives to combat environmental pollution, including steps to make industries environmentally compliant. It is hoped that these efforts will help reduce fog and smog in the coming years.
