The literary world today remembers the iconic Urdu poet Parveen Shakir on her 31st death anniversary. Her poetry, celebrated for its sensitivity, depth, and fresh feminine voice, continues to inspire readers across generations.

Parveen Shakir passed away on December 24, 1994, in a tragic traffic accident in Islamabad at the age of 42, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in Urdu literature.

An alumna of the University of Karachi, Shakir held degrees in English literature and linguistics. In 1982, she successfully cleared the competitive civil services examination and joined the Pakistan Administrative Service.

Throughout her distinguished career, she served in the Customs Department, rose to the rank of Collector, and later held prominent positions including Principal Secretary and an appointment at the Central Board of Revenue (now FBR) in Islamabad.

Shakir’s debut poetry collection, Khushbu, published in 1976, earned her immediate acclaim both nationally and internationally. Her work introduced a unique feminine perspective to Urdu poetry, exploring themes of love, emotions, and social realities with simplicity and depth.

Despite facing personal challenges, Shakir’s poetry remained her defining identity. Known for her lucid yet evocative language, she experimented boldly with styles and themes, ensuring her work remains timeless.

Decades after her passing, Parveen Shakir’s words continue to resonate, firmly establishing her as one of the most influential voices in modern Urdu literature.
