Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, daughter Maryam and son in law Captain (retd) Safdar Awan have been shifted back to Adiala Jail as their five-day parole came to an end on Monday.
The Sharif family members had been granted parole following the passing of Kulsoom Nawaz. The former first lady died on September 11 at a London clinic after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif brought the deceased’s body back to the country after which she was laid to rest at the Jati Umra graveyard on September 14. Her funeral prayers, offered in London and Lahore, were attended by thousands of people, including delegations from leading political parties.
A petition requesting an additional five-day extension is expected to be moved by the incarcerated Sharif family members. However, the provincial government and the home department have yet to receive the request.
According to sources, a petition will be submitted to the home department and it is expected that the parole extension will be accepted on humanitarian grounds.
