KARACHI: Chief Election Commissioner has directed Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to make adequate security arrangements for Sindh local bodies elections and NA-245 Karachi by-elections.

In a letter to the chief minister, CEC Sultan Raja has also directed to take action over the firing incident and violence in the recently held NA-240 elections in Karachi.

At least one person was killed and dozens others were injured in the by-polls. There were also reports that ballots papers were stolen from a polling station.

The CEC said strict action should be taken against those responsible for interference in polling and causing unrest.

The chief election commissioner also directed to ensure foolproof security in the upcoming NA-245 Karachi by-elections.

He said the Rangers and Pakistan Army can be deployed at sensitive polling stations if required to ensure law and order. He said all efforts should be made to ensure the polls are held in a conducive and peaceful manner.

The CEC has also written a letter to Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa to provide security for the upcoming elections.

He praised the Pakistan Army’s cooperation and exemplary role at sensitive polling stations in the previous elections.

The CEC wrote “he hopes that the Pakistan Army will do its best in the forthcoming by-elections and because of the unrest and violent incidents in Karachi and Lahore by-elections, the services of Pakistan Army are being sought.”

The first phase of polling for the LG elections in Sukkur, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad and Mirpurkhas divisions will take place on June 26. The elections in Hyderabad and Karachi Divisions will be held on July 24.

The by-elections for NA-245 Karachi will be held on July 27. The seat fell vacant after the death of PTI MNA Aamir Liaquat Hussain.
