India has resumed energy imports from Iran for the first time since 2019, purchasing both crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), according to official sources.

Indian refineries recently received a shipment of crude oil from Iran, marking the first such delivery in nearly seven years. Along with this, India also imported 44,000 metric tons of LPG from Iran.

The shipment was transported on an approved tanker and has already arrived at Mangalore port, showing a renewed step in energy trade between the two countries.

India had stopped importing oil from Iran in 2019 after sanctions were imposed by the United States during the administration of Donald Trump. However, recent changes have allowed limited trade to restart.

Last month, the United States temporarily eased sanctions on Iranian oil to manage global supply shortages and rising energy prices. This decision has made it possible for India to resume importing crude oil and gas from Iran.

Officials from India’s energy ministry said that the country’s oil needs are currently being fully met and that there are no issues with making payments for these imports.
