A speeding car struck a motorcycle in Karachi’s North Nazimabad area, killing a youth and a child.
The accident occurred in Nusrat Bhutto Colony when a Hiace vehicle ran over the motorcycle, killing 12-year-old Atif and 25-year-old Usman on the spot. The driver fled the scene, and police impounded the vehicle while launching an investigation.
Karachi has experienced a sharp increase in traffic accidents, with 107 fatalities reported in the first 45 days of 2025. The victims included 78 men, 14 women, 11 boys, and 4 girls, according to rescue services.
A report from the Chhipa Welfare Association revealed that 1,493 people were injured during this period, including 629 men, 193 women, 42 boys, and 18 girls.
Most accidents involved heavy vehicles, such as dumpers, trailers, and oil tankers. From January to early February 2025, 32 accidents were linked to heavy traffic.
In response, the traffic police issued 34,655 challans, arrested 490 drivers, and revoked 532 vehicle fitness certificates. A four-member committee was also formed to investigate the causes of the accidents and recommend safety measures, including reviewing vehicle fitness certificates and driver licenses.
Recent traffic accidents led to arson incidents, with cargo vehicles and water tankers being set on fire in Karachi’s Landhi, Korangi, Al-Karam, and Surjani Town areas. Police have detained 10 suspects related to these incidents.
In protest, the Dumper and Oil Tankers Association staged a sit-in at the National Highway, condemning the burning of vehicles by unknown assailants.
