The Supreme Court’s constitutional benches are set to begin hearing cases from Thursday, November 14.
According to details, the decision emerged from a meeting of the seven-member constitutional bench established by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).
Senior Supreme Court judge Justice Aminuddin Khan presided over the meeting, with Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar participating via virtual link, sources reported.
The meeting lasted an hour, concluding with a decision to commence hearings before the constitutional benches on November 14.
The Judicial Commission of Pakistan, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi, appointed Justice Aminuddin as the head of the constitutional bench with a 7-5 majority vote.
The seven-member bench includes Justice Aminuddin Khan, Justice Ayesha Malik from Punjab, Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Jamal Mandokhel from Balochistan, as well as Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi from Sindh, and Justice Musarrat Hilali from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Sources stated that CJP Yahya Afridi, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Muneeb Akhtar, along with PTI members Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz, opposed the formation of the constitutional bench. However, the decision was passed by a majority vote.
The Judicial Commission of Pakistan’s meeting was attended by senior Puisne Judge Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Munib Akhtar, and Justice Aminuddin Khan, along with Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan, Pakistan Bar Council representative Advocate Akhtar Hussain, PPP’s Farooq H Naik, PML-N’s Shaikh Aftab Ahmed, and Roshan Khurshid Barrucha.
