PTA declares internet shutdown in Punjab, Balochistan amid By-Elections

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has declared that mobile services will undergo a temporary shutdown in select districts of Punjab and Balochistan on April 21st and 22nd, coinciding with the upcoming by-elections.

This directive, issued by the Ministry of Interior, aims to safeguard the integrity and security of the electoral process.

Given that effective communication is vital for the smooth functioning of elections, especially for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to maintain contact with polling stations post-counting, ensuring uninterrupted internet availability is crucial. Previous instances of miscommunication resulted in widespread election irregularities.

The decision to suspend mobile networks is a precautionary step to uphold public order and prevent potential misuse of these networks during the electoral period. This measure is part of a broader strategy aimed at facilitating a fair and peaceful voting environment, as asserted by the PTA.

Residents residing in the affected districts are urged to plan accordingly and utilize alternative means of communication during the suspension period.

The PTA has assured that services will be restored promptly once they are deemed safe and appropriate following the conclusion of the by-elections.
