Nepra announces increase of Rs 4.56 in electricity prices

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has announced an immediate increase of Rs 4.56 per unit in electricity prices, citing the December fuel adjustment.

This adjustment, effective immediately, is set to burden consumers with an additional Rs40 billion in the upcoming month.

This escalation in tariffs continues a recent trend, with electricity prices surging by a total of Rs8.69 in the past two months. November alone saw a Rs4.13 increase, leading to a collective extra cost of Rs76 billion for consumers within this short two-month span.

The price hike applies to all consumer categories, excluding K-Electric and Lifeline customers.

Attributed to fluctuations in fuel costs during December 2023, the impact on individual bills will vary based on consumption levels and specific tariff categories.

This supplementary cost adds strain to households and businesses already grappling with rising inflation, potentially leading to heightened production costs for industries reliant on electricity and influencing product prices.
