Peshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System recently secured the 5th International Award for Bus Industry Restructuring Program (BIRP), a testament to its success in reshaping and revitalizing the city’s public transport.
Dr. Tariq Usman, CEO of TransPeshawar, announced the achievement during a press briefing on January 9. This recognition came through the Sustainable Transport Award (STA) for the year, which acknowledged Peshawar with an honorable mention for its innovative BIRP.
The heart of the plan involved making big changes to the city's public transportation. They got rid of 504 old vehicles and brought in new, eco-friendly buses that run on a mix of diesel and electricity. This switch not only made transportation more environmentally friendly but also improved safety, made things more inclusive, and easier for everyone in Peshawar to get around.

The BIRP initiative isn't just recognized locally; it was up against impressive projects from all over the world. There were nominees from countries like India, Argentina, UAE, Brazil, Colombia, Turkey, and China.
