ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly deferred bill seeking to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court.
The bill to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court to 23 was presented by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Member National Assembly Daniyal Chaudhry, on which opposition barrister Gauhar opposed the bill.
Chairman Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf(PTI) Barrister Gauhar said that only the government can bring such an amendment under the constitution, the number of Supreme Court judges cannot be legislated in the private member.
He said that in Pakistan the Supreme Court works for 155 days in a year, in India the Supreme Court works for 190 days, government should increase the working days of the Supreme Court to eliminate the pending cases.
Subsequently, NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq halted Chaudhry’s attempt to present the bill and deferred the motion.

Earlier, treasury benches in the Upper House of the Parliament on Monday defended the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024 tabled by Senator Irfan Ahmed Siddiqui of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), calling it as “law to protect the citizen’s right to security”.
Minister for Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar while addressing the third meeting of the 342nd session of the Senate said the legislation was tabled with good intentions.
