When it comes to keeping cargo secure in a pickup bed, tie-down straps are the usual choice. However, Toyota is exploring a new approach.
Recently, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) unveiled a patent application, filed by Toyota on June 8, 2022. The patent suggests using air bladders to prevent items from shifting during truck movement.
In this proposed system, the air bladders would be mounted beneath a bed cover, and a compressor between the inner and outer walls of the bed would supply the air needed for inflation. Once inflated, these bladders would take up enough space to stop objects from moving or vibrating in the bed.
While Toyota's main focus is on trucks, they acknowledge that this bladder system could be adapted for other vehicles with spacious cargo areas, like SUVs.
If this concept goes into production, the air-bladder system might complement traditional tie-down straps. Toyota emphasizes in the patent application that even with the introduction of the air-bladder system, tie-down straps could still be used to secure.
