Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) is getting some big changes according to Immigration Minister Marc Miller and Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault.
Before, businesses had to show they couldn’t find Canadians or permanent residents for a job using a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). During COVID-19, they made it easier by extending the LMIA's approval time to 12 months.
Now, because the job market is improving, they’re going back to the old 6-month LMIA approval time starting May 1st, 2024, except for some employers in a special program.
Also, they raised the limit on low-wage foreign workers in certain industries to 30% in 2022. But from May 1st, 2024, only construction and healthcare will keep this higher limit.
Minister Miller said these changes are part of a bigger plan to manage immigration better. Canada wants to reduce the number of temporary residents to 5% of the population in three years. These updates show Canada wants to balance job needs with a strong immigration system.
